Erin Gongrss

I hate to give myself away, but our secret editor in chief insists on us having bios to be closer to our readers, so here's some trivia about myself that I would like to share and people might like to quote: To me, fashion is something that I most of the time can't afford. I do not know how to write serious articles. I love microsoft word synonym. I used to be one of the Asian kids that Americans are scared of losing jobs to, until I decided not to be in Engineering anymore. I have secretly wanted to become the captain of a pirate ship (way before Johnny Depp vs. big octopus man). I used to think banana splits were the best thing ever in this world aside from kit-kats, now I think banana splits are the best thing ever in this world. I am Chinese, and I'm not naming my kid "Ching Chong!!!" What is the volume of a solid sphere when we know the diameter of the ball is 2 inches? If you skipped the last sentence, that's why we get your jobs!!! As I continue to explore this country, I find everything in America very enchanting, but most of the time so simply retarded and extremely fattening. I am a freelance hairstylist: eringong.carbonmade.com. This too shall pass + 42 + 36.

    MBFW: Zang Toi F/W 2011

For Fall/Winter 2011 collection “Timeless Beauties”, Zang Toi incorporated the most elegant and luxurious materials that he has ever used in his collections. Colors such as camel, charcoal, black and nude with emerald decorations were a gorgeous color scheme of the show.

The entire show was structured to be completely classical and elegant. Graceful classical music sent models onto the runway, wearing some of the most glamorous Zang Toi designs to date.

The Toi fabulous collection received a standing ovation when the reality TV star Jill Zarin walked the runway with the beautiful $30,000 final gown.

    Highlights of the show:

“This is the first time that I designed a collection without a specific theme. I wanted to focus simply on classic pieces crater in the most luxurious materials. My clients are my true inspiration and this collection is dedicated to them – they deserve only the best, they are timeless beauties” – Zang Toi

    MBFW: Vivienne Tam F/W 2011

    All Photos: Winnie Jeng

Opening with a full house, the Vivienne Tam F/W 2011 collection was definitely a visual feast. Inspired by the traditional Kun Opera that originated six centuries ago in China, this collection is a romantic story of modern fashion meets traditional Chinese culture. Vivienne Tam incorporated some of the most essential natural elements in Chinese traditions such as wind, fire, and cloud. Fabrics such as tweed, wool, silks and lace united perfectly with these patterns, and at the same time makes the collection absolutely appropriate for our mundane world.

    Favorite picks:

The water sleeves with a hint of Japanese styled Kimono are the perfect interpretation of yet another Kun Opera tradition; the water sleeves are used by Kun Opera performers to express exaggerated emotions.

The traditional Chinese water painting adds to the elegancy of the dress.

    MBFW: Venexiana F/W 2011

    All Photos: Winnie Jeng
Opened with the classical “Swan Lake” (that swiftly transitioned to a heavy rock beat), the Venexiana 2011 Fall collection is a perfect blend of class, luxury, elegance and also fun. Fur, metal, silk and wool were used with distinct color combinations to create eye-catching dresses. Metallic gold and silver, bright colors were also designer’s favorites. Venexiana certainly put on a great show from beginning to end, the upscale coats and nicely–cut evening gowns were but a few of the highlights of the show. The two beautiful wedding gowns decorated with Swarovski crystals were absolutely stunning and fabulous, reminding the audience of the classy swan theme from the beginning of the show.

The extravagantly detailed design and the choice of material made this outfit extraordinary– the photo doesn’t do justice to the sparkle.

    Nautica F/W 2011

    All Photos: Winnie Jeng

The off-site Nautica presentation took place in the gallery right next door from the Lincoln Center site; the room of models consisted of three different platforms of statuesque people. An white-sail platform and a plank walkway added a sailor look. The orange and dark combo might is a fun alternative if you’re already tired of just the basic colors.
The classical use of cotton, wool, and knit were what made this collection perfectly preppy and wearable.
    Favorite Pick:

The 2011 fall collection is perfect for a good boy look– check out all the looks in the gallery below:

    MBFW: Buckler F/W 2011

    All Photos: Winnie Jeng

The Buckler presentation took place right in front of the Grand Street Buckler store in SoHo. Although took place in the chilly winter, the fabulous Buckler 2011 fall/winter season did not disappoint. As urban as it always has been, this collection has more of a big city boy vibe. With a pleasing usage of bright colors, lots in this collection are feeling young and ready-to-go-out. Details of the collection were chic and filled with energy.
    FORMzine’s favorite picks:

The yellow buttons on the black shirt looked very cute with a dorky flare. Almost all of the outfits are perfectly wearable. Pick up a pair of bright-colored pants, cool winter boots, plus a chic and warm coat, and you’re ready to hit the streets of SoHo.

Gary Numan: The Pleasure Principle 2010 Tour

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of his landmark album: The Pleasure Principle, the new wave icon Gary Numan joined us at Crofoot Room in Pontiac, Michigan on October 25th.

The Pleasure Principle climbed into the Top 20 on the U.S. charts 30 years ago propelled by the unforgettable Top 10 single “Cars.” The album’s impact was crystallized in the U.S. when Numan performed “Cars” and “Praying to the Aliens” to millions of people on Saturday Night Live.  The music from The Pleasure Principle gave birth to new musical movements in the States over the next decade, including hip-hop, industrial and techno. Outside of The Pleasure Principle, the tour will feature material spanning across Numan’s career, including tracks from his forthcoming album Splinter which he’s currently working on in the U.K.

Numan’s fans from the mid-west were definitely enthusiastic about his  U.S. tour and packed up the Crofoot Room on a regular work day night. It’s not surprising to find the demographic of the crowd is mostly in their forties and fifties, but the presence of some groups of younger audience affirmed Numan’s iconic role in the New Wave revolution. Burberry’s new Winter Collection

Studs will always be my weakness (no, not that kind). After Lady Gaga decided to add studs and spikes to her favorites, they seem to have regained mainstream popularity (those Sam Edelmen shoes, anybody?!). Studs are a disguise of femininity, so to speak. It’s a declaration of the feminist way of sexiness. “We are sexy, but we also bite.” It’s an element of power, control and women’s status in the society. But enough of the political analysis. With all the stud-love, it’s no surprise that when I first laid eyes on the new Burberry Winter Collection, I knew I was in love. Frankly though, I feel that studs have never been really out of fashion, unlike…suspenders or fedoras (pfff).

Die Antwoord: Evil Boy – A music video of much controversy

Warning: Video is NSFW (not safe for work)

Halloween is just around the corner, and this music video could be a warm-up for the monsters you are going to be or meet. Being someone who won’t go to Cedar Point during Halloween for the second time, the intro of the video gave me the creeps. So a heads up for the cowards like me, it’s not something you are going to appreciate on your own at midnight.

Exaggerations of my fears aside, the reason why this video gave me the creeps is not because of the creepiness but the elicit  presentation of genitals and languages. However, when I looked into it, there is actually an interesting story behind it:

…Wanga felt that he was being coerced into a form of ritual circumcision by his community. It’s sort of taken for granted within his ethnic group that you must do this, so much so that if you are a young man and you do not participate, you are ostracized, as the band explained to me.

The thinking, and this is communicated very directly to the young men, is that if you don’t participate, you’re gay. You’re effeminate. You’re not a real man. You never mature from being a boy to being a man.

He struggled with all of this in real life: with what it meant for his personal and cultural identity. And he came to a point where he was like, you know what? Fuck you all. The fact that I won’t consent to having my penis sliced with an unsterilized knife, out in the bush, and risk infection or worse– that doesn’t mean “I’m gay,” as you say. I reject this tradition. If that’s what being a man is, fuck it, I don’t want to be a man. I’ll be an “evil boy for life,” even if it means I am ostracized from my community.

    –Xeni Jardin

The mice coat, District 9 limb and the exotic stage designs might be keeping the audience from seeing the true intentions of the video. Nevertheless, it is gratifying to know that there is actually something more meaningful behind those penises.
