Timo Weiland: Spring/Summer 2011 and Interview with Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein

Dress-up or dress-down, female or male, these garments work for anyone willing to throw a little color into their life!  Incredibly trendy, fun, and offering our generation some of the best fashions of the previous one, Timo Weiland sends the message that there are things we should learn from the past as we embrace the future.

Providing a full wardrobe for men and women who appreciate the art of dressing, Timo Weiland’s Spring 2011 collection touches on the lightness of seaside life and the mix of color and print found in nature.  Rooted in the modern lifestyle of the fjordlands and archipelagos in Scandinava, the collection is infused with the usage of vibrant color juxtaposed with offset layers of signature Timo Weiland prints.  Playing with volume and proportion, Spring 2011 mixes new textures, bold colors for knits and dresses, and a nautical sportiness in the menswear.

    Binetti: Spring/Summer 2011

Ethereal garments meet down-to-earth inspiration.  A true collection of globalization, Binetti: Spring/Summer 2011 collection is the result of the best that spring and summer has to offer from around the globe.

As a result, this collection has significant international appeal. Just to name a few, inspirations include: flower embroidery and hanbok-inspired dress designs from Korea, crane embroidery from Japan, Grecian infused American maxi dresses, 1960s flower-power prints from America, pant designs from India and Dubai, and an overall Grecian goddess flair.  As this description entrails, the true value of this collection is in its carefully thought out and, subsequently composed details.  It brings together many – not to mention the best – elements of diverse culture’s fashion’s into a cohesive collection.  This is all part of a larger theme seen throughout Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center this season (see Timo Weiland: Spring/Summer 2011 article for another example).

Many sacrifice functionality for fashion, but in this case the wearer doesn’t have to.  The tones – ivory, gold, honey, white, and soft pink hues – combined with airy, flowing fabrics allow for clothing very wearable in the heat; thus, filling a basic spring/summer need in a refined manner.

The wing-like design of the wedding dress (first “Best of Collection” image below) represents how small the fashion industry and society as a whole has become.

Elegant, enchanting, tranquil, and inviting, Binetti: Spring/Summer 2011 is truly one of the most quintessentially beautiful collections shown during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.  If this is the effect of globalization on fashion, I can’t wait to see more…

Mara Hoffman: Spring/Summer 2011 and Interview with Mara Hoffman

A casual location for a casual collection.  Similar to the Mara Hoffman Swimwear 2011 collection, the Mara Hoffman Spring/Summer 2011 collection is one of FORMzine’s favorites.

As writer Mark Behnke from FashionTribes.com stated: “At this presentation, the audience was actually wearing the designer’s clothing.”  That’s the point – Mara Hoffman’s patterned, colorful designs are not only stylish, but functional.  Similar to the live Bongo drum band playing during the presentation, wearing Mara Hoffman designs is an authentic experience.  People feel both original and comfortable in her garments.  This combined with Mara Hoffman’s assertion below that she really wanted to design a more casual, wearable line, means that next season everyone will likely be wearing her clothing!

    Vassilios Kostetsos: Spring/Summer 2011

A literal interpretation of Grecian pottery and warring Amazonians, Vassilios Kostetsos: Spring/Summer 2011 is for the bold, strong, and feisty.  Need to go to war on the streets of Manhattan?  This is the collection that will literally protect its wearer.

My Spring/Summer 2011 collection is an inspiration from the Greek antiquities and the Amazons, representations, shapes and elements that decorate the Greek pottery…

The dynamic strength of the Amazons comes alive by today’s women, transforming them to the modern “AELLA,” as the first Amazon was called.

    Thuy: Spring/Summer 2011

Flirty, fun, yet still incredibly chic – Thuy: Spring/Summer 2011 is the perfect collection for a 20-something’s needs.  Date outfits, party dresses, out-on-the-town with the girls ensembles – Thuy has excellent garments for all occasions!

True to form, structural tailoring is where Thuy Diep excels.  Similar to the carefully designed Audi Form show cars surrounding the runway, the black trims, unique leather straps, pleating, and intricately sown fabric layering combine to create very trendy, wearable, and – most importantly – flattering garments.  This collection has some of our favorite use of the pleating, 1960s inspiration, and multiple layering of sheer fabrics trends yet.

The bright, light tones brought a more playful side while the garment’s actual forms remained flattering through convention.  Happy, sexy, fun – who could want for anything more?

Venexiana by Kati Stern: Spring/Summer 2011

As the runway music at Venexiana by Kati Stern: Spring/Summer 2011 stated, “Come on in and let’s start a scene!”  The gowns sent the same non-verbal message through their vibrant tones and equally spirited models.

The ensembles appear as an enticing package, if you will, for both the wearer and onlooker’s enjoyment.  A person in these garments will be noticed.  Exuding confidence, the wearer seems like a gift that you just can’t have; strong, powerful, and self-expressive, wear these garments to cocktail and black tie events and be seen!

    Tadashi Shoji: Spring 2011

Walking through the Tadashi Shoji Spring 2011 collection is reminiscent of strolling through the beautiful landscape of the monasteries in Italy.

Inspired by the Renaissance Frescos of Piero Della Francesca and Botticelli, and drawing upon the icy cool color palette of Venetian landscape and architecture, my spring 2011 collection is an homage to 15th century elegance and romance.

    Duckie Brown: Spring/Summer 2011

Formzine’s favorite menswear collection thus far this season, Duckie Brown: Spring/Summer 2011 entitled “Here’s to Duckie,” put on not only a good show, but a great collection!

Incorporating top trends of the season – texture and grey prints - in a unique manner, Duckie Brown played with traditional male garments through cut and material to produce modern, updated versions.  Where many menswear designers are going for more traditional, fitted outfits, they chose to use a looser, almost “explosive” approach.

    Buckler: Spring/Summer 2011

For the man who knows himself well and wants very wearable, yet stylish garments, Buckler: Spring/Summer 2011 has plenty to offer.

Andrew Buckler S/S 2011 collection was inspired by the German modernists’ school, Bauhaus, and the 1924 Olympics.

The Bauhaus School of Design embodied early twenties century modernism.  This school was for artists and designers but closed its doors forever during WWII; however, continues to be a defining factor within modern design aesthetics.  As expressed by the schools last director, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe: “Less is more.”
