Photoshoot: Ties

As far as function goes, ties are admittedly useless; constricting about the neck, complicated to knot and commonly overpriced.  Whereas socks keep your feet warm and belts hold up your pants, neckwear–like jewelry–is purely decorative, and for the discerning of eye, ostentatious.  If you take a step back and look at all of fashion, it’s the same story with the entire industry; ‘fashion’ is not, in the scheme of things, necessary in the same way clothing is, but the little pieces of flair are our individual ways to show off who we are.

With ostentation and neckwear in mind, this photoshoot revolves around unabashed, laidback confidence; pieces were pulled from every man’s wardrobe staples at Urban Outfitters, ASOS, Ragstock, Aldo, BELLVILLES, The Getup, and some lucky vintage finds from the Ann Arbor Kiwanis Thrift Sale.  When putting together a look yourself, create a base and then add; experiment with mixing prints, highlight a specific color for pop, or repurpose items–turn a necklace into a tie chain, or a button into a collar pin for some extra quirk.

Gary Numan: The Pleasure Principle 2010 Tour

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of his landmark album: The Pleasure Principle, the new wave icon Gary Numan joined us at Crofoot Room in Pontiac, Michigan on October 25th.

The Pleasure Principle climbed into the Top 20 on the U.S. charts 30 years ago propelled by the unforgettable Top 10 single “Cars.” The album’s impact was crystallized in the U.S. when Numan performed “Cars” and “Praying to the Aliens” to millions of people on Saturday Night Live.  The music from The Pleasure Principle gave birth to new musical movements in the States over the next decade, including hip-hop, industrial and techno. Outside of The Pleasure Principle, the tour will feature material spanning across Numan’s career, including tracks from his forthcoming album Splinter which he’s currently working on in the U.K.

Numan’s fans from the mid-west were definitely enthusiastic about his  U.S. tour and packed up the Crofoot Room on a regular work day night. It’s not surprising to find the demographic of the crowd is mostly in their forties and fifties, but the presence of some groups of younger audience affirmed Numan’s iconic role in the New Wave revolution. Awesome Halloween Costumes!

While we’ve been at PDN’s PhotoPlus Expo, we’ve been keeping an eye out for everything else interesting. After a long day at PDN, The FORMzine team (chilling with the SHEI crew) hit the streets to check out some of the creative costumes in NYC. If you’ve got a better one, shoot me an email with a pic to sunny@formzine.com, and we’ll post it here. (I just may hook the most awesome costumes with free stuff!)
