Beer bottles have gone hand in hand with artwork (gotta love Jolly Pumpkin’s bottle art) but a student from Iceland, Thorleifur Gunnar Gíslason, along with two other students, created an idea for a brewery’s artwork that is uniquely eye-catching. From:
“This beer brand concept was born on a sunday night at school where we were supposed to make a brand for a micro-brewery. The name is traditional Icelandic name that could be loosely translated into “thirsty one”.
The concept is a simple one. One beer, 10 different bottle designs by 10 different designers. The design would be changed annually. The design could be put on beer glasses as well. The design is limited to black graphics on a 33cl glass bottle.
This was the result from collaboration between three graphic design students at the Iceland Academy of the Arts.”

For the third runway show of Fashion in Detroit, twelve students from various universities (including Michigan State, Eastern Michigan University, and Wayne State) around the state of Michigan were selected to show off their best pieces. Each student showed one piece, and though the pieces ranged from parachute pants to abstract couture pieces, they all were exemplary in their ideas. The talented student showcase was refreshing to see amongst the well-established designers.

Algaerium, a project by design artist Marin Sawa, harnesses the natural colors and designs from nature in her design elements. Using her own custom species of algae, the “algaeriums” produce beautiful designs that respond to light and grow in their own unique ways. From her website:
Algaerium is a domesticated habitat for living organisms. It celebrates natural phenomena and innate abilities such as photosynthesis and bioluminescence of algae by revealing them to our everyday interface. As a result, the final material constructs are a unique synthesis of cross-categorical skills encompassing traditional lacing, molecular cooking and chemistry, biology, blown glassware and fluid transfer systems.
The design specially focuses on two different types of algae’s photosynthetic metabolism. Green algae convert light energy and CO2 into O2 and biochemical energy (biofuel) and white algae (bioluminescent) produce its bioluminescence from photosynthesis. The photosynthesis of green algae generates a responsive colour system. The water is CO2 sensitive and changes to purple from yellow as the algae photosynthesize. While the design using bioluminescent algae uses flow to trigger the glow of the algae.
Bio-nerds appreciate the beauty in the practicality of algae-farming, an important ecological (and commerical/industrial/culinary) practice, but even those unfamiliar with the basics of plants+light=cool stuff can appreciate just how pretty these would look next to the window. Currently, these soft structures pictured are available, but soon there will also be creating “mini-necklaces” that will also be available for sale.

Tokyoflash, the watch company that loves doing unique and bizarre watch ideas, has come up with something new. Through the use of clever optical illusions, the watch face is completely unreadable upon first glance, and the numbers are only visible when you do that thing where you cross your eyes a certain way (yes, some people manage never to figure out how to do this). Try the example below:

The good news is, even if you suck at doing this optical illusion trick (or you don’t have time to play games), simply press a button on the side of the watch, and the time will appear.

You know a safe is suppose to store your valuables, so typically they are built for form and not to attract attention. So I really don’t get the Lamborghini safe; this one-off safe from Brown Safe Manufacturing was built to order from a client that wants his safe to match his Lambo (so I guess his consider his Lambo to be safe? I think my tank would be safer). Check out the pictures– I have to admit it is a sweet safe with all the carbon fiber trim, but I’d be afraid someone would steal my entire safe, just for the cool factor.

Last time we showed you what happens when Spike Lee meets Absolut; this time we have ABSOLUT x Journey to the West. Recently released is Absolut 72变(Chinese for “transform”) featuring the monkey-king Sun GoKu from the famous Chinese tale “Journey to the West,” which, as legend has it, has 72 different transformations. The bottle is designed by Gao Yu, a Chinese artist, and only 350,000 bottles of Absolut 72变 will be exclusively available on the Chinese market in August. Reportedly, it retains the original taste of Absolut.
